Wet strands of hair fell in front of Riley’s eyes, making it hard to see. On the ground under her feet dammed by an overflow of water, her blood pooled. They could’ve taken her then, but they didn’t.
in the shadow of the tiger
He strained to see through the distorted barrier of the window and fragmented cracks. Dust blanketed the surface of the glass opening. The blurry white silhouette, too big to hide, emerged stopping long enough for Eric to get a solid look. Now he knew what it was, but he couldn't believe it. He blinked, and the tiger disappeared.
the shift
The inside of the van’s compartment trembled as a horrible screech ripped into the metal body of the roof ripping it into jagged twisted shards. Embraced together and then torn apart as the van went over. The burst of the impact caused instant deafness, blades scraping pavement, and their screams of pre-death horror lost into the night air.
the hunted
Conman drove the bus hard grinding gears and maneuvering around rows of boxes. Some bounced up and flew in the air as the front fender glanced edges. Riley’s heart raced. She felt no fear, only trepidation. The bay doors seemed to be miles away when, in fact, they were fifty feet in front of them. The chance of blowing a tire or the engine made those decreasing fifty feet seem impossible. Behind them, repeating shots pounded the rear of the bus.

He knew his house, and he knew it well. The third step would squeak and possibly the eleventh, so he counted and stepped over those steps reaching the top without a sound. When he stopped and faced the bedroom door, he reached down and withdrew a hunting knife. The blade alone extended well over fourteen inches straight and razor-sharp at the top, wicked, and serrated half-way down.
